I'm currently trying to move into DBA role from my current GIS role. I've been on some interviews but, while I have some experience, most interviewers think it's "light" because I haven't been maintaining dozens of 300GB dbs.

How does one enhance there db skills? It's not like programming where I can contribute to an open source project. I'd like to practice on some large dbs and get some experience querying some data warehouses, etc.

I think this is much easier if you transition from within your current company.  Strike up a friendship with the lead DBA, tell him you're interested in learning more about his role, and offer to take on some low level maint tasks off of his plate.
