I don't get a salary -- I get dividends, draw, distributions, bonus, and owner's equity. I'm 50% owner of my shop. To fill in your template: Experience: 16 years Education: Bachelor Science, Computer Science Certifications: MSCE, MCDBA, MCSD Company: Very Small Local Privately Owned Company Title: Everything (developer, dba, accountant, manager, boss, owner, sales, marketing, etc.) Location: Cincinnati, OH. We have good years, and we have bad years. It all depends on what's going on -- such is the risk, and the life of a business owner. In the bad years: 50K (ish) In the good years: 175K (ish) All in all, over the last 8 years of running the business, it's been hanging (on average) around 95K. This is *extremely* good pay for my area for a 9-5 cube-drone-developer, but when you consider the other duties I have, and the number of hours I put in, the risk exposures I hold as business owner -- I'm vastly underpaid.

I get 18000€ in Portugal for almost 2.5 years of experience. It seems a bit low compared to what I usually see in the UK/US. Oh well, maybe that's why i'm thinking of moving abroad. Sorry if this may seem a bit off-topic but what is the difference between getting a contract/permanent job using an agency or going straight to the employer? Zidane, I thought you made a bit more, football pays well.

~$90K as web developer. No formal technical education. Skills: Top percentile HTML/DHTML/XML/XSLT/CSS/JS/Flash, etc. (I was doing AJAX/Web 2.0 before anybody ever thought of those terms), journeyman server technologies, good VB6, some VB.Net, decent C#. When had own business, income could range from $60K to $240K. Both extremes were awful. You hate to turn down work, but you hate having to do it all on deadlines. In practice, you're either stressed beyond belief or depressed because you're not billing anything right this second.
It varies a lot from year to year, but on average it's around a million, but I am the owner.

I'm surprised the New York salaries aren't higher. $100-$120k for people with over a decade of experience and masters degrees, and long hours? Andrey, do you really not get paid more for your 14 hour days, or did you just omit bonuses?
sloop Wednesday, July 12, 2006
I am also surprised by Andrey's mediocre salary although not bad, from the interview thread I thought he is a coding guru with tons of experience in his belt, which must be true because he wrote that DICE article, he is supposed to make obscene amount of money in the Capital of Capitalism. What's going on? Definitely I am making more than that in a place where cost of living is only 70% of Manhattan. Hmmm, I need to think twice of going to NYC now...

"try { salary (22); } catch (const exception & e) { cout<<"why happened to you?"<<endl; }" I'm very lucky. I made (and hung on to) a bunch of money during the bubble: not enough to stop working, but enough that I only take jobs that I'll love, and I don't sweat the salary. Besides, I started in 1984 at $24k/year and $72k/year still seems like a lot of money to me.

US-based dev, I am surprised to hear that. Anyone with a $60K+ salary should be able to afford a foreign holiday.
semigeek Friday, July 14, 2006
to semigeek It depend on what you mean by affording foreign holiday. For a 2 kid family with mortgage a 2 week summer trip to europe can be unaffordable. But if you are single and on to Europe like a backpacker or a family for a 5 day trip to SE Asia it may be affordable (even for you). For me from Aus the biggest expense is the airfare, it's so freaking away from everywhere :(

All; Thanks for the overwhelming response to my post. Very interesting responses. Salaries are always a touchy subject, and corporate culture keeps everyone quiet about what who makes what. What I found amazing was the difference in pay among those who worked for a big company, and those who did their own thing.

Most likely you'll either be hurting for work or so overwhelmed that you're completely stressed out. Also, I don't like like mixing a full time job with contracting. It sounds appealing but then you're working 14 hour days and every weekend just to keep up. </preach>

490K as web developer.

I spent 4 months on the couch smoking bongs and playing Xbox. Every time I want a contract I get one, opportunities are really good in Brisbane lately. Most people here in California only do that until they learn enough English to get a better job, the rest of them own their business and don't have to worry about getting laid off. Plus we don't have to live in Detroit.

Hi, My friend and I has consolidated the data presented in this discussion topic into a spreadsheet which hopefully make it more useful. We've written some script to process the data in the post and found that about 2/3 of them are machine processable! For remaining 1/3, we have tried our best to process it manually. To view as an online spreadsheet: http://www.editgrid.com/user/davidlkf/Salaries_-_what_do_you_get To download as excel: http://www.editgrid.com/user/davidlkf/Salaries_-_what_do_you_get.xls Up till now, we have processed up to the post by "Atchim Olajuwon" and there are 482 useful records. Please note: * Irrelevant records are deleted * Records with hourly rate only is deleted * We've manually calculate total salary for those give bouns as seperate figure. Since there are a large amount of records, we may have introduced errors. If you find your record missing and incorrect there, you may edit the online spreadsheet above, here are the instructions to gain write priviledge: (1) visit the online spreadsheet URL above (1) click the unlock button in the status bar below (2) input password: salary (3) you will gain write access to this spreadsheet Hope you will find it helpful. Enjoy!

I thought my salary wasn't particularly great compared to some of the others, but then I remembered when I was last job hunting that I struck off a lot of potential jobs immediately because their salary was lower than what I was getting at the time. I've definitely had a "hockey stick" appearance in salary; although I'm earning 3 times as much as my initial salary as an intern, I haven't had a particularly noticeable raise since 2000.
