What is Team System? MS don't seem to know ...

I wanted to see what Team System was so went to the MS website. Here is the FAQ entry:

What is Visual Studio 2005 Team System?

Visual Studio Team System integrates process guidance, prescriptive architectures, and life-cycle tools for successfully deploying solutions on the Windows platform. Team System includes proven process guidance, prescriptive architectural guidance, and solution accelerators that assist organizations in improving the predictability and reliability of delivering mission-critical solutions.

WTF? Surely that has been generated by one those joke autotext generators? Has MS been completely infected by marketing BS?

It should be:

Q. "What is Visual Studio 2005 Team System?"

A. "Too expensive"

Alternatively,

Replaces the budget of your entire Team.

It's not _that_ expensive. I don't understand why everybody acts like it's in the multiple tens of thousands of dollars.

"What is Visual Studio 2005 Team System?"

It finds the equivalent of your team in India and sends the project there.

Alternatively call Microsoft Sales and see if you can buy a "solution accelerator".

Boggle Brained that was Hilarious!

Yes, it seems confusing but I believe in VSTS.
It is still in beta but should go RTM in ~2 weeks.

This site will help you:

The cost is high for a Microsoft Dev Tool but it is much cheaper than the equivalent Rational Suite or IntelliJ tools.

MSDN Universal upgrade to VSTS Developer Edition is $1,800.

Jeff, it *is* that expensive. It is "the price of a used car" expensive.

Peter: Where are you getting this? From what I can see:

The server software itself comes in at a very lite $2800.

The Team Editions are available via the Premium MSDN subscriptions. The retail price is ~$5.5K/Dev for the first year (a brand new subscriber) of MSDN Premium and then ~$2.5K/year after that. (The Team Suite Edition comes in at about 2x this.) This doesn't seem at all bad to me, especially considering what all the developers get access to with the MSDN subscription.

Now yes that adds up across a large team, but so does anything that's not free or close to it.

If cost is a problem, you can consider NTeam.

NTeam is supposed to the free open source equivalent to VSTS.

Presumably the VSTS description was written by the same person who wrote the .NET description so long ago.

In the case of .NET, they couldn't just come out and say "It's mostly like Java" so they had to resort to marketspeak instead.

So the question is, what is VSTS a clone of?

$5.5K + $2.8K = reasonable used car. My used car (a steaming pile of poo) has cost less than $3k for the past year: car + repairs + fuel + insurance.

NTeam? Haha! NTeam is vaporware. It never got off the ground and never will. It is almost a year old and they have nothing to show for it.

Here's your team system:

From what I've heard, Team System is Visual Studio integrated with a replacement for SourceSafe, a bug/issue tracking database, and some project management stuff.

Have a look at its competition. VSTS is VASTLY cheaper than the other tools/vendors (eg Rational) in its space.
