Easy card question

Given cards ace through 10 face down, you can choose 2 cards one after the other. After looking at the first card you can either choose to keep it or pick a second card. If you pick a second card, you keep the second score. What is the best strategy to maximize the score?

Assuming the cards Ace through 10 are randomly ordered all faced down, what makes the second card's value always greater than the first one if the first one is between 1 to 5?
