Doesn't Cold Fusion already know about RTF documents?  I could have sworn we were generating RTF documents using native Cold Fusion calls back in 2001.

ColdFusion didn't have any native document-generation capabilities until very recently.  Last month, Macromedia released ColdFusion MX 7.0, and that version does have functionality to generate PDFs.  I don't know about RTFs, though.

In the past, my company has generated RTFs using third-party Java components.  We've used iText and JFor, which are both open-source.  JFor was pretty easy to use.  iText is more extensible and supports more document formats, so we've moved to that for new development.

Or just use word as an activeX control.
We use python to open word behind the scenes, import an html file and output a word doc.
This way you are guaranteed that the doc is genuine word.
