Just in case this might prove useful to anyone else I have posted the code for a VB.NET class that writes JSON strings here http://mikeoncode.blogspot.com/2007/05/json-re-visited-from.html together with some example code for using the class.
Simple JSON objects are simple to construct but when they get complex then the syntax can be a pain to get right - this class is intended to handle all of the formatting.
