Program for creating an MPEG move from set of images

I would like to create a short animation from image files I can create as PNG, GIF, JPG as needed, and prefer MPEG as the output format. No sound, no fancy effects, this is for algorithm visualization. So I would prefer a straightforward program.

Need to run on Linux, and I have no budget so open source is best.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Interesting, I posted a reply to this earlier, but did it from another computer and I forgot to put my name on the post.  Apparently, some mod deleted it.  Too bad, because it was a link to a tutorial to do exactly what you were asking.  Maybe I linked to a place I shouldn't have?

Take a look at FFMPEG.

A command like this should do the trick.

ffmpeg -r 10 -b 1800 -i %03d.jpg test1800.mp4

Look at FFMPEG

http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/
http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/ffmpeg-doc.html

It is open source (LGPL).
It could combine some images into an MPEG file.

Freshmeat recently mentioned http://www.gromeck.de/?image2mpeg. It looks like what you're after. I haven't tried it though.
