Css and Select in IE 6/7

Anyone ever managed to use css to change the padding on a select element in IE 6/7 e.g.

<select style="padding:5px">

<option>My Dropdown</option>

</select>

It doesn't seem to have any affect, though in firefox it works fine?

This article might help:
http://www.satzansatz.de/cssd/onhavinglayout.html

My initial though is to 'add layout' to it (although I have not tried it) as the article says -- something like:

height: 1px;

Again, the article will discuss it better that I can - but, often in IE, the concept of 'adding layout' to an element fixes the issue.

This is coming late and the OP may not be reading still, but...

If the intent is to put padding within the select box and around the item text, try adding a margin to the options instead. e.g:

option { margin: 5px; }

If on the other hand you're adding a border to the select box and want padding to appear between that and the select, try putting a container element around the select box and apply the border and padding to that.

SELECT element in IE is not rendered by IE itself but it's rendered by some component in the OS itself. This leads us to various SELECT element related bugs in IE 6.
