Verifying email address, php.

I know there are are regexp tools to verify the format of an email addrees, and also tools to check that the domain of an address.

What I would prefer to do that thing of sending them an email, which has a link in it to a registration page on the web site. Presumably on the basis that if they got the email, the address must be valid. And some sort of GUID in the link will prevent scripts that automatically sign people up.

Any pointers to routines?

it's not too bad of a script to write.

php has built-in functions for sending mail.  One is called mail().  You can find info on it here: http://us2.php.net/manual/en/ref.mail.php

you could also use md5() for generating the random keys for authentication.

I send emails with http://phpmailer.sourceforge.net/ , guid is created with
$guis=md5(uniqid(rand(), true));

phpmailer is a very nice class.  I have used it in past projects and it is pretty solid.

Sending an email is easy... you got some good link above.  Validating an email address is hard.  Here is the generally accepted regular expression for validating an email address against the "true" definition in RFC822:

There are shortcuts, but they can come back and bite you.  Even after validating it properly, it still might be wrong.  Just send the email to the adress as the user types it.  They'll figure it out if they screw it up.
