Theres's graphics engine for chucking those out -- it's designed for use in web systems called "GD".

There's a perl and a c interface. It's open source.

We used OWTChart
http://www.maptools.org/owtchart/

I think it is based on GD Library.

It's free and really simple to use and will produce graphs like the ones you want.

They may be a little less than you're looking for, but those charts are a little like Edward Tufte's "Sparklines", for which there are several free libraries available:
