Debugging email sends

How do you guys do this, Is there some kinda smtp proxy which will show you the calls it receives or would you run a sniffer? or is it the 'configure web app to use the local iis smtp server and check for the messages in the queue folder'? just curious...

I would personally write my own proxy server to be used as a basis for the automated testing of the smtp client functionality, that way you can verify that your client code conforms to (at least) rfc 821.

Fakemail is a dummy SMTP gateway written in Perl. It's a tool for testing applications that works by acting as an intercept for outgoing mails.
