Javascript Rich Text editor?

Is anyone aware of a good Javascript/DHTML text/HTML editor for use in a web-based application?

Ideally it would be cross-browser, not an IE-only control.

Feature set would be basic formatting (bold, italics), indentation, and bulletted or numbered lists.  Don't really need control of fonts or other advanced word-processing features.

The output would ideally be RTF, HTML, or possibly just text with marked up XML that the control could render.  I'd like to be able to compose a word document as output from a collection of these littel snippets.

Thanks in advance, haven't had much luck googling.

At a previous company I worked at, we rolled our own and probably spent thousands of man-hours doing so.  Fortunately, now there are a few commercial products and a couple free ones.  The best ones I've found so far have been FCKeditor (free, www.fckeditor.net) and ActivEdit (commercial, www.cfdev.com).

In my experience the biggest problem is that most editors rely on the IE Object which allows HTML editing, and that wrecks the HTML and fails to round-trip it.

We currently like the look of this chappie:

I strongly recommend you timyMCE (http://tinymce.moxiecode.com/), it's free, open source and woks well in most browsers (IE.Mozilla, Firefox). I's got the most important features, and is easy to write plugins for.

Good Luck!
