RoR using SQL Server as a backend?

Does anyone have any links to how to do this or any advice?

Thanks in advance!

I haven't run rails against sql server, but I've used ruby both in windows & linux with it. Windows is easy & works pretty fast, linux is harder to setup. I'd recommend not using sql server, ruby & linux as a combo, from everything I've seen, the performance just doesn't match using either windows or a different db.

Anyway, windows + linux + sql server should work out of the box if you use the one-click install, for linux follow this tutorial:
http://wiki.rubyonrails.org/rails/pages/HowtoConnectToMicrosoftSQLServerFromRailsOnLinux

make sure you follow all of the instructions building the packages required, or you'll run into trouble.
