I need to integrate a USB joystick (not sure which one yet) into an app I'm working on. Basically will need to pick up events from the joystick and turn them into a proprietary protocol to be sent over the network. The platform is winxp, most likely.

Anyone got any pointers on good places to start?

DirectX is probably a good place to start if you are using Windows.  You didn't specify which operating system you are interested in, though.

Download the DirectX SDK and check the samples.  If you're looking at other platforms, you'll probably want to look into SDL.
