Does anyone know where to find guidance on writing audio applications for Linux systems? I haven't found anything at this point.
The audio will be generated by the program, as tones with specified volume and frequency. It will not be playing back media files.
Initial target systems are Debian, but the more generic, the better.

ALSA is what you want:
There is also GStreamer.
