RSS/XML adding extra tags

I want to add extra tags to my own feeds for my own projects. My question, how strict are most RSS readers? Most RSS feeds don't specify a schema or something similar, but I know some pricks will add them.

Basically I want to enhance RSS a little bit. It shouldn't effect the core RSS2 feed.

Just add another namespace. XML readers are supposed to ignore any tags they don't understand that are in a different namespace from that which they are expecting.

    <xtra:mytag>....</xtra:mytag>

and so on and so forth.

Some clients (e.g. newsgator) can render the extra tags.
Also check out the extensions Microsoft is proposing; one of them is a very sensible way of saying 'dear client, please render the following tags in these ways'.
