Google's Use Of XMLHttpRequest

When Google use the XMLHttpRequest object in Gmail (for example) are they dynamically manipulating the page's DOM to update its content? If so, isn't a consequence that that the DOM that's in memory doesn't correspond to the original HTML markup for the page?

To answer your question: yes. If you check the source code it will not be consistent with what is shown in the browser.
