The final curtain...

This forum has been going since 2004, which is a long time in Internet years. But its is obviously on its last legs now. Having been an active poster since 2005 I couldn't let it fade away without saying something.

So thanks to everyone who has posted so much great stuff on here over the years. I've learnt a lot. And thanks to Joel and Fog Creek for starting it and for keep the lights on.

Will the site stay up as read-only, or shut down for good?

And should we all move over to http://discuss.bootstrapped.fm instead, which seems to be the new active forum? I know you're there already.  ;)

I hope it will stay up.

I like the discuss.bootstrapped.fm forum. It is more SaaS oriented than this forum (which is less relevant to me), but the discourse software is excellent and the atmosphere is very constructive. Other forums are available.

Actually, it started before then. I first started here in 2000.

I'd also like to extend my thanks for all of the people who have posted here over the years and especially to Fog Creek for hosting our random thoughts.

The archive goes back to 2004. I had assumed that is when it started.

The various subboard spin offs, including this BoS, started in 2004. The original discussion board predates them. The formal archives here go back to March 2003.

However, there are also secret unmentioned archives outside that list that go back further... to Oct. 14, 2001.

(And even that one mentions the "old forum" that Scorpio remembers starting with, but I couldn't find any links to it.)

FWIW the article he mentions in that thread was relocated to http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000008.html

Thanks and regards to all members who might still visit.

Provided the T&C allow that, it should not be that hard to scrape the archives and produce an offline tarball with index?

I think I'll give it a shot. We'll have two long weekends in a row (Apr 30-May 3, then May 7-9),

I would like the forums to stay online but read-only.  They haven't been the same since the stackoverflow misadventure, especially since the stackoverflows I used to frequent changed so that almost everything became "off topic".

Have fun and prosper folks.

It's certainly been fun and it's sad to see it fade.

Why can't the forum just stay up and open, even if nobody posts? It's not like hosting a dead forum will break the bank.

Unmoderated forums fill up with spam and no-one wants to moderate a dead forum.

We had a good run, but nothing lasts forever.
